DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

A thorough investigation by the Internal Affairs Division of the Dothan Police Department is revealing new details in the case of a city employee who put a puppy in a freezer where it ultimately died.

William Henry Roberson, 57, of Webb, was charged with animal cruelty after police say the Animal Control Division employee mistakenly placed a live, though unconscious animal in the freezer. The investigation now reveals that Robertson thought the dog was already dead.

Investigators say there was one live but unconscious animal in a cage and one deceased animal in a different cage in the same room, but Robertson apparently overlooked the deceased animal.

The live puppy was in the freezer for 20 to 30 minutes before another employee found it. The mixed breed dog died shortly after being discovered.

The facts were revealed during a determination hearing on August 26, for which Roberson was present. Authorities presented the case a violation of city personnel rules and regulations regarding misconduct, a major offense.

The disciplinary actions against Roberson are being kept confidential, according to Police Chief Gregory Benton. If found guilty in a court of law on the charge of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor, Roberson could be punished by fines and up to a year in jail.
