Wildlife Officer responds to Maumelle flooding

MAUMELLE (AGFC) – A sudden deluge of rain Sunday evening flooded parts of Maumelle and had a wildlife officer with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission busy in his boat.

Cpl. Ross Spurlock, who lives in Maumelle, said, “Most everybody was calm. They had been through this before. I helped one family with an infant, then another man was trapped in his car for a while.”

As much as six inches of rain fell on parts of Maumelle in a short period Sunday. Water in some area was six feet deep, but most receded quickly. Spurlock said, “No one was in a life-threatening situation, but some people just wanted to get out of there. Some people went to the upstairs of apartments and waited it out.”

Rapid response to emergencies is just a part of the duties for AGFC wildlife officers, according to AGFC Major Pat Fitts. “This is just one example of the many ways our wildlife officers serve the citizens of Arkansas,” Fitts said. “Most of them have flatbottom boats close at hand, and this was the case with Spurlock,” Fitts added.
