The main and River Campuses of Southeast Missouri State University closed due to a City of Cape Girardeau water main break on Wednesday, Aug. 27 that feeds the main campus.

A water main broke near the boiler plant in the center of campus early on Wednesday morning. It impacted both the water pressure and the air conditioning on campus.

According to the university, the water main on campus was repaired by 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Repair crews then had to fill, drain and refill a nearby water storage tank. They have since gathered water samples and are having them tested.

Once water safety from this particular water main is confirmed by testing and approved by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, normal operations will resume meaning this water main source can be reconnected and used by the campus and nearby residences.

Approval is not expected until late on Friday or early on Saturday.

Water flow and pressure will remain at their current levels until the city receives approval from the MDNR to reopen the repaired water main. The water remains safe to drink on campus.

"While the air conditioning, the temperatures, are staying pretty steady, when you can't use the restroom facilities and you can't use water faucets and we need the water pressure for our food service to cook food for the campus, it really makes it difficult to keep the campus open," said Kathy Mangles, vice president for Finance and Administration.

Crews were on the scene on most of the day on Wednesday trying to figure out what happened. It's believed that natural causes were at work.

Nicolete Brennan with the city of Cape Girardeau says the broken section of pipe was fixed and testing should be occurring.

"In this particular case it's on a campus and it affects a pretty good size population of the community," said Tim Gramling with Cape Girardeau Public Works. "And where it's at on the campus it's a little tight and a complex area to fix. So, that makes it a little harder to fix quickly because it's in a relatively tight area, around some facilities that the university has that we don't want to affect."

The city of Cape Girardeau says the water is safe to drink. However, a few residents near the campus might be experiencing lower water pressure.
