Wilson Co. deputies investigating arson, homicide case; suspect arrested

NORENE, TN (WSMV) -

Officers arrested a man who is believed to be a suspect in an arson and homicide investigation in Wilson County. Authorities said Alan Mooney Jr. is a suspect in a suspicious fire that destroyed his father's home in Statesville.

Mooney, 38, was arrested on Saturday morning in Murfreesboro after allegedly leading officers on a chase spanning two counties.

Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said he expects Mooney to face more charges in connection to a suspicious fire reported Friday afternoon in Statesville.

Emergency crews responded to a house fire Friday afternoon on Armstrong Road, according to Wilson County deputies. First responders found a house and two nearby buildings fully engulfed in flames, but investigators could not locate the man who lived on the property.

Sheriff Bryan said Alan Mooney Sr. lived at the house. Investigators have not been able to find him since the fire.

"Any time you have a fire at a residence, you look for that person who lives there," Bryan said. "We couldn't find that person."

After interviewing family members, investigators identified Alan Mooney Jr. as a person of interest. When they located the man on Highway 96 in Wilson County, Alan Mooney Jr.  led officers on a chase into Rutherford County.

Bryan said several agencies apprehended Alan Mooney Jr. in Murfreesboro. He was charged with evading arrest, assaulting an officer and reckless endangerment. Alan Mooney Jr. is being held at the Rutherford County Jail.

Crews found unidentifiable skeletal remains in the debris Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff deputies have called in the state bomb and arson squad to assist in the investigation, along with a team of forensic anthropologists from Middle Tennessee State University.
