Some upset over Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools flier

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

The Charlotte Mecklenburg School board voted just weeks ago to support the sales tax referendum you'll see on the ballot in November.

If approved, the sales tax you pay in Mecklenburg County would go up by a quarter of a cent. The money would fund for teacher raises.

But seeing this information posted and printed on fliers has parent and former city council candidate Dennis Peterson upset.

"I went to South Meck Rocky River High School football game last (Friday) night and as we were leaving we found the flier with the quarter cent sales tax referendum laying out," said Peterson.

The paper explains what the extra revenue would do for to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Peterson believes this flier and what is on CMS' website is not just informing people. He says it's politicking and it crosses the line.

"It appears that CMS was advocating and campaigning for the quarter cent sales tax increase," said Peterson.

WBTV reached out to CMS Saturday, but didn't get a response.

But, WBTV did talk to CMS superintendent Heath Morrison earlier this month about the possibility of this literature coming out.

Dr. Heath Morrison told us his legal staff briefed his staff on what CMS can and cannot do to promote the referendum.

The district cannot use district funds to tell you how to vote, but it can spend money to inform you that a vote will be happening.
