CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) -

The Town Manager of Chadbourn has announced he will resign to take a job in a Washington, D.C. suburb.

Stevie Cox said he will leave the Columbus County town after seven years to work as Town Administrator in Capitol Heights, MD.

Cox will be moving from a community with 1,856 residents to one with a population of 4,337, according to census data.

Cox has a history of making headlines. In May, 2011, Cox was indicted for impersonating a police officer, among other charges.

In November, 2011, Cox was charged with running a stop sign, driving with a revoked license plate and driving without car insurance, according to Columbus County Sheriff's Deputies.

Most notably, earlier this year, Cox was suspended by Chadbourn's town council, moments after the board directed him to discipline two other high-ranking town employees.

Chadbourn Mayor Fax Rector said he expects town council will explore several options for replacing Cox, including hiring a part-time manager or switching to an administrator position.

Rector said he will seek guidance from the Cape Fear Council of Governments.

Both Cox and Mayor Rector say it was Cox's decision to leave.

"I'm leaving Chadbourn in a better situation than what I inherited," Cox said, adding that during his tenure the town received approximately $15 million for infrastructure and community development projects.

He cited improvements to First Avenue and the town's ability to remotely read water meters as examples of successful projects.

"I've had the good fortune to work with two very good mayors and good councils during my time here."

Cox, who has been Town Manager since 2007, will serve his last day on the job in Chadbourn on October 8.
