Erosion at Freeman Park causes headaches for Labor Day

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) -

The combination of hurricane season and high tides have created erosion issues at Freeman Park. These issues are not only causing a headache for beachgoers but law enforcement as well.

"This is the first year we've had an erosion issue that is so impassable we've had to sit out there and monitor it," said Sergeant Ward of the Carolina Beach Police Department.

Our stormy summer and frequent high tides have caused excess sand to be pulled towards the inlet.

"When you have this humongous sand bar, water has to travel somewhere and it's traveling further and further inland," explained Ward.

The tide is coming so far inland that it is actually hitting the dune line, causing a number of issues.

"It's coming in now to the point where you can't drive on the wet compacted sand," Ward told beachgoers as they tried to drive through the erosion. However, the compacted sand wasn't his only concern.

"We've had vehicles swept out into the waterways," said Ward. "When a vehicle rolls over or sinks to one side it becomes a life issue at that point."

With one more day left in the holiday, officers are advising everyone to take extreme caution when heading to the north end of Freeman Park.
