Crittenden County Female Inmates Getting High School Educations in Jail

DECEMBER 2, 2004 - Posted at 3:21 p.m. CST

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - Women in the Crittenden County jail can get the equivalent of a high school diploma while serving out their sentence.

Teachers Judy Catt and Linda Doyle have been holding classes for the last two years, helping women get ready for a new start.  The teachers are from the satellite classroom program at Mid-South Community College.

Some of the inmates say it's been worth it to be in jail just because they've been able to get the equivalent of a high school education.

Inmate Vanessa Brown is to be released Friday.  She says she'll be getting out with a diploma.

At present, the program is just for female inmates, but the jail is looking at adding teachers for men, too.
