Update: JPD releases names of victim, suspect in murder-suicide

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police are investigating a murder-suicide that happened Tuesday morning, according to Lt. Steve McDaniel.

McDaniel told Region 8 News 26-year-old Kenneth C. Thomas, Jr. shot and killed 17-year-old Diamond C. Ebron in her yard in the 3100 block of Ashwood Drive.

Witnesses told police Thomas shot Ebron "multiple times" with a handgun before leaving in a blue Ford Crown Victoria.

The shooting took place at 10:08 a.m.

Nine minutes later a Craighead County sheriff's deputy spotted the suspect's car traveling west on Arkansas Highway 226 near Craighead County Road 161.

McDaniel said the deputy "pulled behind the vehicle and was preparing to initiate a traffic stop" when Thomas abruptly pulled to the side of the road.

As the deputy was approaching the car he heard a single gunshot, McDaniel said in a news release.

Thomas was found alone in the car, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound from a 9 mm handgun, which officers believe was used in the earlier shooting.

According to JPD lead detective Sergeant Cassie Brandon, Ebron and Thomas had been involved in a dating relationship.

Both were at the Ashwood Drive home before the shooting.

Brandon said Ebron was leaving the residence when the shooting happened.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Courtney Brown will have more information on Region 8 News at 5 and 6.
