JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - September is Hunger Action Month and representatives with the Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas want you to get involved.
Thursday, September 4th is "go orange" day! Director of Development for the food bank Vicki Pillow said they want everyone to wear orange this day to show support for hunger relief efforts.
"Arkansas is still way up there in food insecurity so we still have many, many people who are worried about how am I going to feed my kids tonight and how are those kids going to be able to concentrate in class when the don't have a full stomach," said Pillow.
Pillow said people don't realize how huge the need is in this area.
"Many people who come to our food pantries have two working adults in the household," said Pillow. "They may be working minimum wage jobs. They're both working, they have some kids. Gas prices are still high, food prices are still high. They are just having trouble making ends meet."
Arkansas is currently tied with Mississippi as the state with the highest rate of food insecurity in the nation. The Food Bank of NEA serves 5,000 people a week.
