$500,000 bond set for man accused of raping girl

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - District Court Judge Keith Blackman found probable cause Wednesday to charge a man with raping a young girl.

On Tuesday Jonesboro police were called to St. Bernards Regional Medical Center where a 14-year-old girl had just given birth to a baby 25 weeks premature.

According to court documents, the girl told investigators the baby's father was 23-year-old Daniel Valenzuela who was at the hospital with her.

The girl said she and Valenzuela first had sex when she was 13 years old, the affidavit stated. She believes that is when she got pregnant.

In court Wednesday an interpreter with the Craighead County Sheriff's Office had to be located to translate the charges to Valenzuela, who does not speak English and is not a U.S. citizen.

Judge Blackman set Valenzuela's bond at $500,000.

If convicted, Valenzuela could be sentenced to 10 to 40 years or life in prison with no maximum fine. He is scheduled to appear in Craighead County Circuit Court on October 30.
