Youth deer hunt at Cook's Lake

Youth deer hunt at Cook's Lake

CASSCOE  (AGFC) – Know a youth between the age of 6 and 15 that would like to experience hunting and the outdoors but may not have the place or people to take them? If you do, encourage them to apply for a once in a lifetime deer hunt opportunity at a prime location on the Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Arkansas.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation, along with the refuge are sponsoring the hunt. A chaperone and firearm can be provided if the youth needs either for the hunt. The hunt will take place on Dec. 6-7, with a mandatory orientation on Nov. 29.

Only 10 permits will be issued. Those selected for past hunts will not be eligible for this year's hunt. It's a one-time hunting opportunity. Each participant must be accompanied on the hunt by a chaperone that cannot possess a firearm on the hunt.

Youths who have completed hunter education must be accompanied by an adult at least 18 years old. Youths who have not completed hunter education must be under the direct supervision of an adult at least 21 years old.

To apply, print or type the youth applicant's complete name and phone number on the back of an official postcard. Send the postcard to Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge, c/o Jay Hitchcock, P.O. Box 205, St. Charles, AR, 72140.

Applicants may also apply in person at the refuge visitor center at St. Charles. Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 15, 2014. Successful applicants will be contacted during the week of October 15, 2014.

For more information regarding application procedures and requirements for the hunt, contact Jay Hitchcock at 870-282-8246.
