JONESBORO (AStateRedWolves.com) – The Arkansas State women's soccer team will look to earn its first home victory of the season as it takes on Mississippi State Friday evening at 5 p.m. at the A-State Soccer Complex. The Red Wolves conclude the weekend with a road game against Missouri State Sunday at 1 p.m.
A-State (1-2) wraps-up its three-match home stand with the Bulldogs (1-3) after dropping matches to Tulsa and Central Arkansas in the first two games. The Red Wolves fell to Tulsa in its home opener and then suffered a setback against the Bears on Aug. 31.
Arkansas State is in search of its second victory against an SEC opponent since 2011 when the Red Wolves defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 in Jonesboro in the home opener. Mississippi State won last year's meeting 4-0 in Starkville, Miss., to even the series history at 1-1.
Sunday's matchup at Missouri State (1-2-1) will be the third all-time meeting between the two squads with each team claiming a victory in the series. A-State won the most recent meeting 3-1 in 2013, while the Bears' took home a 2-1 victory in Springfield, Mo., in 2005.
Mykel Ward scored her first career goal against Central Arkansas, while senior Samhia Simao leads the Red Wolves in scoring with five points (two goals, one assist). Junior forward Loren Mitchell has also scored a goal, while senior Jena' Kelley has an assist to her credit.
A-State has been aided by a strong effort from its goalkeepers through its first three games. True freshman Sara Wicks and junior Amanda Lee have combined for 25 saves, the third most in the conference. Wicks made 21 saves in her first two games in goal, while Lee made four stops in her first action of the season against UCA.
