JONESBORO (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State freshman Drew Jones was named the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Memphis Invitational the league office announced Monday.
She was a key component in propelling the Red Wolves to a 2-1 record in the Memphis Invitational. A-State defeated UT Martin (3-0) and Memphis (3-2) sandwiched around a 3-1 setback to Ole Miss.
Over the course of the weekend Jones, a native of Fort Smith, Ark., tallied 37 kills for a 3.08 kills per set average on a .286 hitting percentage while earning all-tournament accolades. She had her first career double-double against Memphis when she recorded 14 kills and 12 digs in the win over the Tigers. She also registered 14 kills against Ole Miss on a .382 hitting percentage and nine kills against UT Martin.
“I'm very proud of Drew and she's been a very consistent player for us over the course of the first two tournaments,” A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said. “She had a great weekend and made some pivotal plays to help us win two matches this weekend. Considering that she's only a freshman means she's still developing and will continue to get better.”
Arkansas State travels to Edwardsville, Ill., for the SIUE Invitational Friday, Sept. 12-Saturday, Sept. 13. The Red Wolves open the tournament against in-state opponent UAPB Friday at 4 p.m.
