JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A local woman was issued a misdemeanor citation after her two-year-old child was found wandering in the road Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 9:30 a.m. several people called Jonesboro dispatch to report seeing a small child and a dog walking in the 4100-block of Kellers Chapel Road.
According to the initial incident report, after seeing the child run out into the street several times the witnesses stopped to check on the child and called police.
One woman told Officer Jeremy Smith she picked up the child and went to a nearby home to find the parent or guardian.
The woman stated she discovered the door standing open but she could not get anyone to come to the door.
Smith went to the house and shouted “Jonesboro Police Department” several times.
After getting no response, Smith entered the home to check on the welfare of those inside, the report stated.
When Smith entered the living room area he encountered a dog who approached him “in an aggressive manner.” The officer then backed out of the home.
After exiting, Smith said Kayla Joplin, 21, came to the door.
Joplin told the officer she had been sleeping, adding that the door of the home was “supposed to have been locked.”
Because she was the only adult on-site, Smith issued Joplin a citation for endangering the welfare of a minor-third degree and released her.
