A-State Women’s Soccer Falls to Southern Miss in Double Overtime

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (astateredwolves.com) – Arkansas State and Southern Miss were scoreless for 101 minutes before the Golden Eagles' Andrea Rivera scored in the second overtime to hand the Red Wolves a 1-0 loss Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Rivera's goal came just one minute into the second overtime after taking a long pass from Missy Wentz and then beat A-State freshman goalkeeper Sara Wicks in a one-on-one breakaway to hand A-State its first overtime loss of the season.

A-State (2-5) had two scoring opportunities in the first overtime, but neither by Crystal Zeledon or Tayler Carter landed on target for the Red Wolves. Carter's shot came with 30 seconds to go in the overtime period and sailed wide of the net. The Red Wolves did not attempt a shot in the second overtime.
Arkansas State took 18 shots on the afternoon, the second most of the season, and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Nina Simon took a corner in the 82nd minute and looked to have an advantage off the kick, but was called for an offside to end the attack. Lexi Riggs also had a good look on goal in the 85th minute but her shot sailed wide.

The Red Wolves began the game with flurry, putting two shots on goal in just 1:20 and had five total shots in the game's first 25 minutes. Simao had the game's first three shots on goal, including a header in the 10th minute that nearly gave the senior her fourth goal of the season.
Simao led the team with three shots on goal, while both of Jena' Kelley's shot attempts were stopped by the Golden Eagles. Mykel Ward and Jenna Duerst took three shots and Carter finished with two shot attempts. Jenna Vaught, Lexi Riggs, Jordan Adams, Ava Abner and Zeledon each finished with one shot attempt. Wicks (2-3) made seven stops in her longest career game in between the pipes.
