Backers ask court to dismiss alcohol-sales lawsuit

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Backers of a measure that would legalize alcohol sales in all 75 Arkansas counties are asking the state's highest court to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to remove the proposal from the November ballot.

Representatives from Let Arkansas Decide filed court papers Tuesday seeking the dismissal of the suit filed earlier this month by Citizens for Local Rights. The opponents say petitions were due on the July Fourth holiday, which fell on a Friday.

Secretary of State Mark Martin's office accepted the petitions the next business day, or Monday, July 7.

In the response filed Tuesday, backers of the proposed constitutional amendment say it's been "standard practice" for the state to push back a deadline if it falls on a holiday.

Oral arguments are set for Oct. 9 in the case.
