OSCEOLA, AR (KAIT)- A Jonesboro girl got the surprise of a lifetime Saturday at the Osceola Police Department Poker Run. An 11-year-old girl was diagnosed with leukemia 3 years ago and had the dream to one day visit Universal Studios in Orlando. And on Saturday her wish was granted.
It was the last thing Abby Grommet was expecting today when she showed up to volunteer.
"I thought ‘they've got to be kidding me, this is not happening', I'm either dreaming or this is a nightmare," she said.
Abby was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 8-years-old and finished her last treatment last Thanksgiving. She will travel to Orlando with her family in just two weeks.
"I feel very blessed that we made it through the cancer and that she's going to be able to have a lot of fun and relax, finally," said Cindy Grommet.
Parents, Mike and Cindy Grommet have been keeping this secret from their daughter for 3 months. They said they are thankful that so many people wanted to grant their daughter's wish.
"We've seen it touch so many lives in the community but we never thought it would be us," Mike Grommet.
Abby has a message to other kids who might be battling an illness.
"Stay strong and keep a lot of hope, hope is what got me through and maybe it will get them through too," she said.
This is the 9
year the police department has sponsored the run and has raised over 127, 000 dollars for the Make a Wish Foundation.
