HARDY, AR (KAIT) - North Arkansas Electric Cooperative wants to make sure every child has a chance to put their best foot forward.

With the help of Academy Sports in Jonesboro, the co-op is giving away more than 1,000 pairs of athletic shoes to area third graders.

The co-op and Rodney Hall of Academy made their first stop Thursday at Cherokee Elementary School in Hardy, surprising the kids with boxes of colorful shoes to try on and wear home.

The Sole Power Project is the brainchild of a co-op department manager.

Leah Walker Rouse, NAEC director of marketing and communications, says the manager had taken his three grandsons to buy new shoes before the start of the school year.

“He was astounded at how much it cost,” Rouse said.

Over the next two weeks they will distribute the shoes to 14 different schools, including Hillcrest, Melbourne, Cave City and Mount Pleasant.
