Sloan has been one of the best local tennis players for many years. In fact he played until he was 98. "It's a wonderful game. It's a game you can play for many years and you don't have to have eleven like you do in football," he said. "In his division, his senior division, every time he would go up to the 70s and 80s he would be top ranked, in the top 2 or 3 in the nation," his friend Mickey Bridges said.
Larry the Legend as he's known competed in state, regional, and national competitions, but most of the time Sloan played on weekends with his friends at the Arkansas State tennis courts. They called themselves the Weekend Warriors. "He is the greatest guy I've ever met in my life and if he's happy I'm happy. To pull it off like this like we did says a lot about this man because a lot of people wouldn't take away from their families to do this, but these people love him," fellow Warrior Mickey Bridges said.
Sloan was overwhelmed with his birthday surprise. "You're killing me with kindness. It's a wonderful tribute and I appreciate it," Sloan said.
