A-State Women’s Cross Country Climbs to Eighth in Regional Rankings
NEW ORLEANS, LA (ASU) – A top 10-place performance by the Arkansas State University women's cross country team at last Saturday's (Oct. 4) 25th Annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival meet has paid dividends as the Red Wolves climbed two places into eighth in this week's (Oct. 6) NCAA Division I South Central Region Rankings as released by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
A-State, which is coached by Jim Patchell and Kyle Chandler, occupied the 10th-place position in the South Central Region Rankings for three consecutive weeks (Sept. 15, 22, and 29) this fall. The Red Wolves recorded a sixth-place finish at the 18-team Chile Pepper Festival by scoring 170 points in the 5k race held at the University of Arkansas' Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark. Senior Rexi Parcells and junior Abbey Dixon lead A-State in the meet with a 22nd-place 17:06.40 time and a 24th-place 17:12.50 time, respectively.
The Red Wolves, who were chosen as the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) preseason favorite to win the 2014 Championships and defend their current title, were ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA's Preseason NCAA-I South Central Region Rankings. This past season, A-State concluded the program's most successful season ever by not only claiming its first-ever SBC Championship title but by achieving an all-time best eighth-place listing in the final 2013 NCAA-I South Central Region Rankings.
The USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
The Red Wolves return to action next Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Indiana State Pre National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., and at the UALR Invitational in Little Rock, Ark.
