Managing Holiday Stress

JONESBORO -- The holiday season can be a time of joy and peace, but it can also be extremely stressful! But how do you cope with the chaos, the crowded shopping and even the in-laws?

“There's no perfect Christmas, no perfect holiday. Each one of them is different and this Christmas is unique in it's own way and to accept that,” said Bill Smith of St. Bernards Behavioral Health.

It's that time of year again.... the hustle and bustle of the holidays is here. Managing holiday stress can be tricky; it's often one of the busiest times of the year.

“We have a lot of stress to buy presents and gifts. There’s a lot of parties which can be fun, but can be stressful,” said Smith.

Coping with the stress of the holidays isn't easy, but one thing you can remember to do is to take time for yourself.

“Participating in things you enjoy doing. Being with people you enjoy being around,” said Smith.

Try to maintain as normal of a routine as possible and remember to spend time with family and friends.

“Holidays can be a reminder for a lot of people of maybe people they've lost. It can be a time of celebration, but also a time of grief too,” said Smith.

And if you're looking for a simple way to de-stress, try volunteering.

“Sometimes giving or helping people is a way to reduce stress,” said Smith.

If you find yourself completely overwhelmed, make an appointment with your physician. Often symptoms of anxiety and depression can be increased during the holidays.
