JONESBORO, AR (ASU) — The start of the 2014-15 women's basketball season is less than a month away and in preparation for the regular season the Arkansas State women's basketball team held its Basketball Media Day Wednesday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
Head coach Brian Boyer spoke to the members of the media in a press conference, while players also spoke to media members before practice and gave their thoughts and opinions about the upcoming season.
“Today is practice number eight of the 30 that we are allowed so we are just getting things started up here,” Boyer said. “I have been pleased with the way things have gone. Part of the thing with practice is that you hope the players are in good physical shape and they have come in healthy and stronger and we have gone into practice with the team at full strength.”
A-State returns nine letterwinners from the 2013-14 Sun Belt Conference regular season championship team, including SBC Player of the Aundrea Gamble who led the squad with 18.9 points per game. The 5-foot-9 junior guard from McKinney, Texas one was one of 60 freshman and sophomores ranked among the 250 scorers in the nation last season and she had the 10
best scoring average among all sophomores. Joining Gamble in the backcourt is senior Hanna Qedan who was third on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game. Also returning in at the guard positions are juniors, Brittney Gill, Khadija Brown-Haywood and Jessica Flanery and sophomores Brittany Fowler, Jamie Ruffins and Dominique Oliver.
The Red Wolves face a tough task in replacing its entire starting frontcourt from last year's championship team. Senior Jasmine Hunt could see time in a starting role at the position, while redshirt junior Amanda Lawson, who sat out last season after transferring from Kilgore College, will also see significant minutes. Freshmen Lauren Bradshaw, Aaliya Warren and Ogo Obinabo will figure into the regular rotation and will see playing time throughout the year.
A-State starts the 2014-15 season with two home exhibition games against Truman State (Nov. 4) and Harding (Nov. 10) at the Convocation Center. Both contests are scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff. The regular season will officially begin Nov. 14 against Jackson State in the Preseason WNIT at Convocation Center.
