Hutchinson Ponders Options Again with Top Homeland Security Post Re-Opened

DECEMBER 14, 2004 - Posted at 7:12 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Asa Hutchinson is again being mentioned as a possible nominee to lead the federal Homeland Security Department.  Former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik backed out after it became clear he would have trouble being confirmed.

After Kerik was named, Hutchinson said he would consider running for Arkansas governor in 2006.  Now, Hutchinson's cousin, state Senator Kim Hendren of Gravette, says the former Arkansas congressman is torn about whether to return home or stay in Washington.

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who sits on the committee that would confirm the next homeland security chief, said she would like to see Hutchinson or Senator Joe Lieberman lead the department.
