Region 8 Marine Dies in Iraq

DECEMBER 15, 2004 - Posted at 7:42 a.m. CST

SALEM, AR - A Marine from Salem has died from fighting in Fallujah, Iraq.  Corporal Jason Clairday died Sunday from enemy fire.  The 21-year-old was married July 30, just weeks before his deployment from Camp Pendleton, California, to Iraq.  Clairday attended Salem High School in Fulton County, where he played baseball.  He enlisted shortly after graduating in 2001.  His enlistment was to end this spring.

Clairday was a member of Salem's First Baptist Church.  The Reverend John Hodges said Clairday entered the military to prepare for college.  Hodges said the church expects to host Clairday's memorial service, but that arrangements have not been set.
