FDA: Too much black licorice could land you in the hospital

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - An old fashioned Halloween treat could land you in the hospital if you eat too much, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA states on their website that if a person 40 years old or older were to consume two ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks, it could cause that person to develop an irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmia.

A compound derived from the licorice root called glycyrrhizin can cause the fall of potassium levels in the body which can lead to the heart problems, according to the FDA.
