It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year...Unless You Work at the Post Office

JONESBORO – Post offices around the country were very busy Monday... in fact it’s the busiest day of the year. The daily average volume of mail is 670 million pieces, but just days before Christmas that average will triple to 850 million!

If you placed that much mail end to end, it would circle the earth three times. The main post office in Jonesboro has been working nonstop to handle the local load of holiday greetings.

“I have a daughter who lives out in Oregon and that's they only way to get it to her,” said one woman who had waited in a line for nearly a half hour.

People are trying mail those long distance greeting and gifts to friends and family before Saturday. The Postal Service recommends that all out of state packages be sent by Tuesday. All in state packages should be sent by Wednesday, and at this point the Post Office is pushing priority and express mail.

“Parcel post probably won't make it now,” said Dan McMackin of the Jonesboro Post Office, “Express mail is the only our services we got.”

But even then express could up to two days depending on where the mail is going. Express or priority can still makes it by Christmas Eve.
