Local WWII Veteran dead at 95

BLYTHEVILLE, AR (KAIT) -

A local veteran who survived one of the most tragic events in American history died Wednesday at the age of 95.

Larry Katz, of Blytheville died Wednesday. Katz, originally from Brooklyn, was at Pearl Harbor when Japanese warplanes bombed the island base, killing more than 2,000 people.

Katz turned 23-years-old two days before the attack. During an interview with Region 8 News, Katz said he and his buddies were contemplating going to Wakkaki Beach when the first bombs exploded.

Katz was a radio operator. During the attack, he helped evacuate wounded soldiers from a dry dock.

After his stint with the military, Katz operated a family-owned jewelry store in Blytheville for more than 50 years.
