Man shot by Searcy Co. deputy in shootout has died

LESLIE, AR (AP) - Arkansas State Police say a man shot during a gun battle with a Searcy County deputy sheriff and a state trooper has died.

State police say the agency was notified Friday that 75-year-old John Kolata died at a Little Rock hospital where he was taken following the Oct. 17 shooting. His body was sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

Authorities say Deputy Lang Holland and the trooper went to Serenity Farm Bread bakery in Leslie to investigate reports of a hostage situation and when they entered the store Kolata opened fire. State police say Holland and the trooper returned fire and both Holland and Kolata were struck.

Holland was treated at a hospital and later released.

The county prosecuting attorney will determine if the deadly force was justified.
