Melvin Johnson III Selected in NBA D-League Draft's First Round
NEW YORK ( – Former Arkansas State University men's basketball standout Melvin Johnson III now holds the distinction of being a first-round draft pick after being selected by the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Warriors<> with the 13th overall pick in this past Saturday's (Nov. 1) 2014 NBA Developmental League <> Draft<>.

A 6-6, 205-pound guard, Johnson III was one of three former collegiate players chosen in the first round by Santa Cruz, which is an affiliate of the Golden State Warriors.  Joining Johnson as Santa Cruz's 2014 first-round picks were guard Elliot Williams of Memphis and guard Carrick Felix of Arizona State.

Players selected in the eight-round D-League Draft will join an NBA affiliate, returning, draft rights and local tryout players at each NBA D-League team's training camp, which begin no earlier than this Sunday (Nov. 2).  Only players signed to an NBA D-League Standard Player Contract were eligible for selection.

Johnson III earned All-Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Third-Team recognition with A-State this past 2013-14 season after averaging a team-leading 15.2 points (485 pts.), 4.4 rebounds (141 rebs.) 1.3 assists (42 asts.), and 0.8 steals (27 stls.) per game in 32 contests.  A native of Dallas, Texas, Johnson III concluded his lone season at A-State by currently ranking second among the Red Wolves' career leaders in three-point field goal percentage with a 47.8 percent efficiency rate while his 88 three-point field goals ties for third most on the program's career single-season leaders chart.  The 2013-14 College Sports Madness All-SBC Third-Team selection accumulated 24 double-figure scoring single-game performances for the Red Wolves, which featured eight with at least 20 points.

Nationally, Johnson III placed in four statistical categories among the final 2013-14 NCAA Division I leaders with a third-place ranking in three-point field goal percentage at 47.8 percent (88-184), 35th in three-point field goals made (2.75 avg.), 43rd in total three-point field goals made (88), and 249th in points per game (15.2 ppg.).

A-State registered a 19-13 overall record for the 2013-14 campaign, which represented its second consecutive 19-win season under head coach John Brady.
