DECEMBER 21, 2004 - Posted at 11:41 a.m. CST

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - A southeast Missouri farmer is fined $4,000 for using pesticide in killing about 350 birds.

Authorities say Kenneth Schaffer of New Madrid County admits applying the pesticide Bidrin to the bird seed to control birds he blamed for eating his unharvested grain.

The dead birds, found in August near the town of Lilbourn, were of various species, including several federally protected doves.

Schaffer was sentenced today in federal court in Cape Girardeau.
