Two Arrested for Shooting Train in Clay County

DECEMBER 21, 2004 - Posted at 12:33 p.m. CST

PIGGOTT, AR - They may not exactly be the terrible James-Younger gang of old west lore, but two Clay County individuals have been arrested after allegedly shooting up a freight train as it passed through the Knobel area Monday afternoon.

According to a police report, "The Clay County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call from the conductor on a Union Pacific train, advising that the train had been shot as it traveled through Knobel.  They also advised they saw two individuals dressed in camouflage clothing."  The train was shot just below the engineer's window with a .22-caliber rifle, but no one was injured as a result of the incident.

Sheriff's deputies arrested 18-year-old Jimmy Sweaney, Jr. and a juvenile, whose name cannot be released.

The incident is still being investigated by both the Clay County Sheriff's Department, as well as Union Pacific Police.
