CFPA Issues Weekly National Honors to A-State’s Gordon and Rolland-Jones
JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – Arkansas State junior running back Michael Gordon (Camden, Miss.) and redshirt freshman defensive end Ja'Von Rolland Jones (Mesquite, Texas) were both announced as a national honorable mention player of the week by the College Football?Performance Awards on Monday.
Gordon was one of seven FBS running backs to earn the recognition from the CFPA, while Rolland-Jones was one of 12 defensive linemen honored. The CFPA tabbed Gordon a national honorable mention choice for the second time this season and fifth time of his career, while Rolland-Jones made the CFPA's weekly awards list for the first time.
Rolland-Jones, who was also named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and Gordon helped lead the Red Wolves to a 44-28 road victory over Idaho last Saturday. With the win, A-State improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Gordon tied a Sun Belt Conference record with five rushing touchdowns, ran for over 100 yards for the fourth consecutive game and finished with 150 all-purpose against the Vandals. His five touchdowns not only tied the Sun Belt record for a single game, they were the third most in school history and tied the most by any player in the nation this season.
The Camden, Miss. native rushed for 105 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt, and added another 45 receiving yards on a career-high six receptions. His four consecutive 100-yard rushing games ties the third longest streak in school history. Gordon's touchdown runs included a long of 44 yards, which was his seventh run this season covering 40-plus yards.
Rolland-Jones recorded a career-high eight tackles, five tackles for loss that tied the most by a Sun Belt Conference player this season, a school-record tying four sacks and one pass break-up. His five tackles for loss were the third most in the nation this season, while his four sacks tied the third most in the country this year and also tied the third most in Sun Belt Conference history.
Rolland-Jones was part of A-State's defense that had a season-high eight turnovers gained, including four interceptions and four fumble recoveries. His eight tackles were the third most on the team and the most among the Red Wolves' defensive linemen.
The Mesquite, Texas, native has now posted 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, both team highs, this season. Rolland-Jones ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference and 22nd in the nation in sacks, while his tackles for loss total ties the fourth most in the league and are tied for 41st in the country.
Arkansas State, which can become bowl eligible for the seventh time over the last 10 seasons with one more victory, continues Sun Belt Conference play Saturday,?Nov. 8, when it hosts South Alabama at 2 p.m.
