Local elections: One community stays dry, another avoids annexation

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Some local issues were also decided among top races and measures in Arkansas.

In Independence County, Batesville voters rejected a proposal for the city to incorporate the Southside community. According to the Arkansas Secretary of State's Office, 2,211 said no to the proposal while 1,395 voted for it.

The result is likely a final blow for the city to annex part of Southside after Independence County Judge Robert Griffin

of the community to start a new city in October.

A community in a dry portion of Greene County will still remain dry.

, Lorado (seen on the ballot as the “Township of Salem” measure) has been trying to go wet in order to sell alcohol.

The measure was voted down 139 to 92, according to numbers from the Arkansas Secretary of State's Office.
