A-State Women's Basketball Concludes Exhibition Schedule With 85-81 Victory Over Harding
JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – Redshirt junior Aundrea Gamble scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while senior guard Hanna Qedan added 10 points as the Arkansas State women's basketball concluded the exhibition season with an 84-81 victory over Harding Monday night at the Convocation Center.
Arkansas State led by double-figures with over four minutes to go in the game, but the Lady Bisons chipped away at the lead and pulled within 85-75 with 40 seconds to gp. The lead got down to four points on a wild sequence in which Harding scored six points without anytime running off the clock after the Red Wolves gave up a jumper and also committed a foul off the ball that gave Harding two additional foul shots.
The Red Wolves committed another foul after the make on the second free throw and the Lady Bisons hit both free throws to pull within 85-81, but A-State was able to inbound the ball clernly and run out the clock to hold on for the victory.
“We got what we expected out of this,” A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. “We scheduled a team that we expected would not be scared or intimidated. They came in with a lot of experience and took it right at us. There were some stretches of positives, as a whole obviously, defensively if you give up 81 points is not good. Unfortunately that's where my mindset is right now. Offensively we did some good things, but giving up 81 points is not going to cut it.”
Arkansas State (2-0) jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first half after a 3-pointer by Gamble pushed the advantage to 33-23, but Harding responded with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 33-33 with just over two minutes to go in the half. Jasmine Hunt put A-State back out in front with a pair of free throws that ignited an 8-1 run to close the half and send the Red Wolves into the locker room with a 41-34 lead.
Gamble had 19 points in the second half, scoring on drives to the goal and step back jumpers over her defender. She also grabbed nine rebounds in the second half and also stole a pass in 13 minutes of action.
Qedan finished the night with 10 points and four rebounds, while Khadija Brown-Haywood turned in another solid performance with seven points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Lauren Bradshaw provided a spark off the bench with six points in 11 minutes, while Amanda Lawson and Jasmine Hunt scored six points each.
The Red Wolves won the battle in the post and outscored the Lady Bisons 50-36 in the paint. A-State also scored 27 points off 19 Harding turnovers. Arkansas State also shot 48.4 (31-64) percent from the field, and knocked down 63 percent (19-30) of its free throw attempts.
A-State will turn its attention to its regular season opener against Jackson State in the Preseason WNIT Friday, Nov. 14 at the Convocation Center.
