Paragould Police Department supports Smart911

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) -

While you don't want to dial 911, sometimes it's necessary and life-saving. An online system could help your family get help, faster.

The Paragould Police Department is encouraging everyone in Paragould and Greene County to sign up for Smart911.

Captain Greg Trout of the Paragould Police Department said they are all about it.

“This is something that will help us help you,” Trout said.

Trout said it is easy to register. You simply visit www.smart911.com, click sign up, and the registration process begins. It is free to join, and it's up to you how much information you want to share.

“We can get the answers you want us to have,” Trout said.

Trout encourages everyone to have a detailed profile. You can include information such as emergency contacts, directions to your home address, photos of household members, descriptions of pets, and vehicle information.

The information helps police and other first responders react efficiently and quickly in emergency situations. Smart 911 can even be used when you are out of town.

“If I'm in another state and I dial 911, and the agency that answers my 911 call has Smart911 system,” Trout said. “They can access that exact same information.”

First responders on the scene could have access to vital information regarding medical allergies or who to contact on your behalf.

Trout said some are skeptical because they worry about their private information being shared, but he assures everyone the Smart911 system is safe.

He said the profile and information is only accessible when the phone registered with the account dials 911. It is only during the 911 call that police can access the information.

Trout said the information is not kept in any searchable database, so there is no way anyone can view profile information without a 911 phone call taking place.

Trout explained the system is designed to help first responders react efficiently based on whatever situation they may be put in.

He wants everyone in Greene County to sign up because he said this system can help save lives.
