Jonesboro, AR -- Lauren Payne Reports

Prominent Jonesboro Lawyer Remains Hospitalized After Being Shot Twice

December 27, 2004 -- Posted at 9:30 p.m. CST

JONESBORO -- "Just a pop you know, sounded like maybe a firecracker, or a car backfiring, maybe something like that,"said one witness.

"All of the sudden, I saw a man fall, and I screamed to Debbie, and I said the man is fallen,"said another witness.

The man is Bill Webster, and he had just been shot two times outside the doors of his own law office on Franklin street in Jonesboro.

Witnesses describe the person who shot Webster as a heavyset man in his 60's or 70's, wearing a camouflage jacket, and a black hat.

"The Criminal Division of the Jonesboro Police Department is following up on some leads at this time, and they are looking to question an individual associated with this crime,"said Sgt. Steven McDaniel.

Bill Webster was transported to St. Bernard's, where he underwent several hours of surgery for gunshot wounds to the face and the abdomen.

Officials are now investigating the possibility of a connection between Monday's shooting here in Jonesboro, and a shooting in Sharp County, where a woman was shot in the leg on Sunday night.
