A-State Volleyball Sweeps ULM for Seventh Straight Win
MONROE, LA(11/14/14) – The Arkansas State volleyball squad defeated ULM 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-22) Friday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La., for its seventh consecutive victory.
The Red Wolves (18-8, 13-4) raced out to a 6-1 advantage over the Warhawks (8-22, 2-15) after a Kariana Castanon-Hill kill in the first set, but ULM battled back to tie it at 8-8. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way, and the set was deadlocked at 24-24 after a Sarah Kemp kill. ULM got a kill from Hope Pawlik to earn a 25-24 edge, but A-State won the next three points on a Castanon-Hill kill, attack error, and Drew Jones kill to take set one by a score of 27-25.
ULM began the second set on a 5-1 run, but the Red Wolves responded strongly to take a 10-9 lead on a Mallory Warrington service ace. A-State would not trail again in the set and opened its largest lead of nine points at 24-15 on a Kelsey Reis kill. The Warhawks won the next four points to cut the A-State advantage to 24-19, but a Warrington kill clinched the set for the Red Wolves 25-19.
The third set began with both teams battling to a 10-10 tie before ULM earned a 14-12 lead on a kill from Bayleigh Hoffman. A-State responded to earn an 18-14 advantage on a Reis block, but an 8-3 run by the Warhawks gave ULM the lead at 22-21 and forced an A-State timeout. The Red Wolves responded with a 4-0 run, capped by a Kemp kill, to earn a 25-22 set victory and take the match by a count of 3-0.
“We didn't play our best, but we got an important road win,” A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said. “It's always hard to get conference wins on the road, but we have some things we need to work on. Hopefully we will play better against Georgia Southern Sunday.”
Kemp led the Red Wolves with 12 kills, while Jones and Castanon-Hill added nine and seven, respectively. Warrington earned her 20th double-double of the year by handing out 29 assists and tallying 17 digs. Markie Schaedig led Arkansas State with 22 digs and Jessica Heuertz added 11. Jessica Uke led the team with four blocks to help hold ULM to a .129 hitting percentage.
Arkansas State returns to action Sunday, Nov. 16 in the Convocation Center with first serve set for noon.
