Region 8 school honors veterans by listening to their stories

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Friday was a special day for Valley View Junior High School students as Veterans from around Region 8 stopped classes.

The vets set up stations in the school and students stopped by each table to hear the veterans' stories.

One table features two World War II Veterans.

The veterans were sharing their unique stories about their service, including one from Staff Sgt. Paul Calkin, who recalls one of his experiences in World War II.

“We got shot down and landed in the English Channel; that was on February the 24th, I believe it was 1944,” Calkin said. “We just about froze, we were in the water for about 30 to 40 minutes or so. I don't know exactly how long. Anyway, the British Air & Sea Rescue picked us up and took us into their base.”

School officials said they hold the event to allow students to thank our veterans and learn from the stories they have to share.
