CLARKTON, MO (KAIT) -

A man who police say shot at an unnamed officer earlier this week in Dunklin County has died, according to Dunklin County Sheriff Bob Holder.

Holder said Elton R. Loughry, who was suspected of shooting at a Clarkton police officer Wednesday, died at The Med in Memphis.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol began the investigation shortly after the shooting.

Holder said police received a call from a Clarkton resident, who told them a man was in their yard with a gun.

The man, later identified as Loughry, later fired at an officer, who return fired and shot Loughry in the abdomen, according to police.

"His stomach was hit and his liver was hit and the bullet's next to his spine," Loughry's girlfriend told Raycom New Network's KFVS. "The officers that were here, we all know each other. Elton's never been in trouble for anything serious before. It's sad for everybody."

The officer's name has not been released and has since been placed on administrative leave, per police protocol.
