JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Police were alerted Wednesday to a scam attempt involving a supposed call from Jonesboro City Water and Light.
According to a news release from the Jonesboro Police Department, the caller told a CWL customer that their utility bill was overdue and demanded an immediate payment. The customer's account was current and no money was owed so they refused to give the caller money.
CWL officials believe the call came from Florida.
Police stated scammers will often demand potential victims to buy a pre-paid payment transmitter card, load it with money to settle a fake bill, scratch off the back and call them back with the card number.
Since the card is not tied to a bank account, anyone having the card number can take the money on the card.
CWL said the company does not demand customers with past due bills make an immediate payment this way.
If you are a customer of CWL and have questions about your account, call the customer service department at 870-935-5581.
