Recently, the National Center for Family Homelessness release a study called "America's Youngest Outcasts." It focused on factors like children's health, the poverty rate, education and housing for homeless families. The sad news is the state of Arkansas placed 47th in the overall ranking.
According to the report, nearly 22,000 children were homeless in Arkansas between 2012 and 2013. Let's put this in perspective. 22,000 homeless children would fill up the Convocation Center twice. The number of homeless kids is only surpassed by the number of homeless adults who are parents of those children.
Arkansas's motto used to be "Land of Opportunity." Perhaps the best way we can help our homeless children is by providing opportunities for their parents. Consider supporting an organization that helps the state's homeless, like the United Way, Mission Outreach, and Court Appointed Special Advocates-CASA-which helps kids specifically.
Finding a way to help Arkansas' 22,000 homeless children and their parents will take all of us working together and make this A Better Region 8.
