JONESBORO, AR (astateredwolves.com) – The Arkansas State volleyball squad earned the third seed in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament and will face the sixth seed, Louisiana-Lafayette, in the first round with first serve set for 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27.
The tournament is being hosted by Texas State University, last season's conference tournament champion, at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas Nov. 27-29. UALR earned the top seed in the tournament, while Texas State was awarded the tiebreaker for the second seed over the Red Wolves. Both teams had identical 15-5 marks in SBC play, but the Bobcats won six out of seven sets versus A-State this season to break the tie.
If the Red Wolves are able to get by the Ragin' Cajuns in the first round Thursday, they would advance to play the winner of the Texas State/Georgia State matchup at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28. The top half of the bracket features UALR taking on South Alabama at noon Thursday, while UT Arlington and Appalachian State are slated for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
Arkansas State enters the tournament as winners in nine of its last 10 matches and claimed 20 victories for the first time since the 2011 season. The team's winning percentage of .690 (20-9) is the highest since the 2004 team went 25-8 with a .757 winning percentage.
A-State has advanced to the semifinals of the SBC Tournament in each of David Rehr's two seasons as head coach, marking the first time since the 1999-2000 seasons that Arkansas State won at least one game in back-to-back conference tournaments.
The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Volleyball Championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. and will be available for viewing on ESPN3.
