DALLAS, TX (U of A) - Junior Michael Qualls put away a final free throw to solidify No. 25 ranked Arkansas' 78-72 defeat over SMU and the Razorbacks' true first non-conference road win since 2008 on Tuesday night.
With this victory, the Hogs open their season 4-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign and have won three of their last five regular season road contests dating back to last season. Arkansas has now won 13 in a row against SMU, including the last six in Dallas.
Leading the Razorbacks was sophomore Bobby Portis who came away with 22 points, shooting eight of 13 from the floor. Named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50, Portis has now reached double figures in eight straight games.
Also scoring double-digit points for the Razorbacks were Qualls and senior Rashad Madden. After putting down his 60th career dunk in the first half, Qualls finished with 13 points for Arkansas. Madden added 10 and led the team in assists with five.
Defensively the Hogs put up a strong front, forcing 19 turnovers. Sophomore Manuale Watkins contributed with three steals.
Arkansas will next face North Texas at home on Friday at 8 p.m.
