NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - Some families in Jackson County will be looking for a new job ahead of the holidays after Noranda Aluminum laid off nearly 40 people.
Noranda Vice President of Communications and Investor Relations John Parker said 38 people will be laid off by Monday, Dec. 8.
Parker said Noranda is trying to "match production with demand at the Newport facility for the coming year".
According to Parker, Noranda made the decision to layoff employees to meet the "demand for light gauge foil products produced in the United States". He said the industry is facing increased competition from Chinese imports.
The Newport facility still retains 60% of its workforce.
The smallest of three aluminum rolling mills owned and operated by Noranda, the facility accounts for less than 8% of the rolled aluminum products sold by Noranda in 2014, a news release stated.
