JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Day 1 of the 30th Annual Hurricane Classic at Jonesboro High School can officially be considered a success if you judge it off of close games and great match-ups.
The 3 game guarantee tournament opened up at 4:00 on Thursday with a bout between Osceola and Clarksville, Tennessee. The Seminoles were able to hold off a second half surge from Clarksville as they won by a slim margin, staying in the winner's bracket with a 76-74 victory.
Game 2 pitted the 2A State Champion Cedar Ridge Timberwolves against another Tennessee squad, Liberty Tech. This game was also close but Cedar Ridge came out on top with a 56-52 win.
The prime time match-up was in front of a big crowd as the hosts Jonesboro took on Greene County Tech. The game got off to a lop-sided start as the Hurricane had a 19-0 run to begin the ball game. The Eagles would eventually settle in but Jonesboro was too much as they defeated the GCT 64-43.
The nightcap pitted another state champ, the 4A State Champion Brookland Bearcats against Bill Taylor's Buffalo Island Central Mustangs. The game was a back a forth battle that ended in narrow margin of victory for the Bearcats, they topped the Mustangs 50-49.
Day 2 at the Hurricane Classic begins at 4:00 pm on Friday with a loser's bracket game between Clarksville and Liberty Tech. At 5:30 Greene County Tech and Buffalo Island will tip-off in a loser's bracket battle.
Winner's Bracket play will begin at 7:00 as the hosts Jonesboro take on Brookland in a battle of state champions. The finale for the evening will be a winner's bracket game between Cedar Ridge and Osceola.
The Hurricane Classic will wrap up on Saturday with the championship game starting at 6 pm.
