Crittenden County -- Shannon Johnson Reports

Police Officials Searching for Rapist Targeting Elderly

January 3, 2004 – Posted at 6:14 p.m. CST

CRITTENDEN COUNTY -- Authorities are investigating three unusual rape cases in Earl , Arkansas . Chief Investigator Ed Laxton said, “Since November of 2003 we've had three rapes occur in the town of Earle, Arkansas.”

And the cases have been under constant investigation ever since. The rapist hasn’t targeted a certain area in this small town, but he has targeted a certain group. Victims ages 71, 84 and 94.

“They couldn't give us a positive id on any of the rapes,” said Laxton.

That's because the perpetrator struck at night, when his victims couldn't see him. He entered each home through windows. The first incident occurred on November 18 th , 2003. He stuck again five months later on April 3rd, 2004. And again just two weeks ago on December 23 rd, and this time taking his victim’s dignity wasn't enough. He also stole her money and her car.

“An elderly person is very vulnerable and if they're living alone they're even more vulnerable,” said Laxton.

All three victims were living alone. Police officials believe the rapist is a local and knows his victims. Police are now warning residents to be careful.

Earle Police Chief Willie Frazier said, “They're being told to have good lighting outside or have neighbors to come check on them and so forth.”

Police have beefed up patrols in the area and are looking for suspicious activity. And now, this sleepy little town sleeps with one eye open.

Police are asking for your help in finding the suspect. If you have any information that could lead authorities to an arrest please call Crimestopers at 870-732-4444.
