Home Security Systems Provide Peace of Mind

January 3, 2004 – Posted at 6:44 p.m. CST

JONESBORO -- The cost for peace of mind can be priceless, especially when it comes to home security. These days, home security systems are keeping with the new times and new technologies.

“Home security is all about making your home more secure than the next home down the line,” said Sgt. Stephen McDaniel of the Jonesboro Police Department, “There've been cases in the past where we've answered alarm calls where someone has attempted to break into a house, an alarm system sounds and it scares the criminal away.”

More than 6 million Americans have a home security system, and for many, it's about the peace of mind.

Chuck Hampton, Director of AAA Alarms, Inc. said, “While your home, you'll be able to rest better, just knowing your house is secured. While you away, knowing that you valuables are protected.”

The price for peace of mind doesn't come cheap. Home security systems can run between $400 and $2,000. But if you can't afford one, there are things you can do to keep your home safe.

“You can put larger screws in the door hinges. It's something most people don't think of. But door hinges are sold with about a 1.5 inch screw, and is very easy to push out,” said Hampton.

“Lock you doors, lock your windows to your house. Try to give your house a lived in appearance. Maybe leave some lights on if your going to be away from your home for an extended period of time,” said McDaniel.

And it's always good to know your neighbors.

“The police need to know where we need to be, when we need to be there, so we can have an opportunity to check these things out. And a neighborhood watch is the greatest way to get us there to check out suspicious circumstances,” said McDaniel.

Having a home security system can not only provide a safety blanket, but it can be easy on your wallet in the long run too. You can save up to 20% on your homeowners insurance.
