Governor Orders Arkansas Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor or Tsunami Victims

JANUARY 4, 2005 - Posted at 7:30 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas flags are to fly at half-staff statewide until Friday to honor those who perished in the tsunamis that hit Asia and Africa.

Governor Mike Huckabee made the order to coincide with President Bush's order for American flags to be flown at half-staff through January 7 in sympathy for "the victims of a great tragedy," particularly the many thousands of dead and orphaned children.

The tsunamis, triggered by the world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years, has killed more than 139,000 people in 11 Asian and African nations.

Several Arkansans survived the disaster.  None has been reported killed.
