Peace Corps Volunteer speaks to local students about education

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -

Students at one Region 8 school have a new appreciation for the education they're getting after learning about children in another country.

Peace Corps Volunteer Whitney Dean spoke to students at Nettleton Junior High Tuesday.

Dean spoke about her time working children in Tanzania, and gave them an idea of the culture.

“I'm really hoping they take away the idea of global development and how important it is to us as a country,” Dean said. “Also I want them to understand how good they have it in their country, especially with the education system.”

Dean has been a Peace Corp Volunteer for 27 months and has signed on for an additional 13.

“I thought it was awesome,” seventh grade student Alaysia Carter said. “I learned so much about how the Peace Corps gets to go out of the state for two years and it made me want to feel like I want to do that someday.”

Dean spoke to around 250 students.
